AVHRR OISST Outage due to impacts at NCEI

Hello,

Due to impacts from Hurricane Helene, NCEI's website and processing is currently down without any current estimated return to service.

This impacts users who run CSPP Geo AIT Framework and GEOCAT Level 2 software packages as many products require the AVHRR OISST product from NCEI.

The CSPP Geo team is aware of the impacts to forward stream processing and operations. We are currently looking into alternative solutions for this problem.

As a short term workaround, the most recent available OISST files have been renamed with new dates in filenames, and restaged on the CSPP Geo ancillary server. This will allow continued operation of the AIT Framework package, which currently requires OISST files with a date within the last 7 days.

The Geocat package will also download and use the restaged OISST files. However, users can specify option "--no-sst", in which case it will fall back to using sea surface temperatures from GFS.

Users should be aware that product quality may be impacted by using OISST data older than 7 days, or by falling back to GFS.

The CSPP Geo team will continue to monitor developments at NCEI, and if the outage persists we will assess options before the renamed OISST files stop working in approximately 1 week.

The AVHRR OISST data has resumed production at NCEI.

All backfilled data has been made available on our ancillary servers.
